The Signs of an Adulterous (Prov.5:1-6)
Proverbs 6:32 NIV “But a man who commits adultery has no sense; whoever does so destroys himself.”
Why do people commit adultery? Adultery has been responsible for destroying many families and the lives of millions of people, because a husband or wife dismisses their family’s welfare to gratify their lust. It is also interesting to note that the Scripture text exhorts that a person who commits the sin of adultery lacks sense (understanding), not self-control and not moral fortitude. Proverbs 5 gives an insightful discourse on the dangers of adultery from a father to his son. Although this discourse is in the context of a father addressing his son on an adulterous woman, the lessons are also applicable to a mother or father addressing their daughter.
Since adultery is primarily a problem of understanding, he starts of with a call to wisdom; “My son, pay attention to my wisdom…” The first lesson is on identifying an adulterous woman. He describes her as one whose lips drip honey, and whose speech is smoother than oil (v3). An adulterous woman is good with words, but lacks the solid foundation of good character. You can identify such a person as someone who “talks a good game”, but does not keep to their words. Their words hold little or no value. They do not have a problem telling lies to get what they want. The problem with following after this kind of person is that they lead to a disastrous and bitter end (v4). Proverbs 7:21-22 gives the picture of a man who is led astray by an adulterous woman, as he follows, he is described as “an ox going to the slaughter…”
The other sign of an adulterous woman is that she lacks purpose. “She gives no thought to the way of life; her paths wander aimlessly” (v6). Because the adulterous does the leading with her (or his) seduction and words, she (or he) will eventually carry a thoughtless/senseless person along her(or his) rambling path. The adulterous is a liability. A person of purpose would waste valuable time and resources that could be spent fulfilling purpose and building a more successful family on an adulterous.
Watch out for people who have a way with words and use them carelessly. If a person tells lies on a whim and never keeps their word, keep a distance from them. An aimless person who gives no thought to their life would certainly not give any thought for yours. As a note of caution, adultery is never worth it for any reason.
