Matthew 17:20 NIV “He replied, “Because you have so little faith. Truly I tell you, if you have faith as small as a mustard seed, you can say to this mountain, ‘Move from here to there,’ and it will move. Nothing will be impossible for you.””
The Scripture above had puzzled me for a long time. Here we see Jesus telling His disciples that their faith was “so little”, yet He then tells them if they had faith “as small as a mustard seed…” then they can move mountains. Historical facts suggest that Jesus was referring to a black mustard seed which is a small seed (about 1-2mm) in diameter, and grows into a tree about 9 feet high. Drawing from Jesus’ analogy, it is safe to assume that their faith was little, but the problem was not really the size.
In this, Jesus was teaching His disciples another important principle after they had failed to heal the demon possessed boy that was brought to them. The key to this lesson is found in the last statement Jesus made, “Nothing will be impossible for you.” Though they had little faith, their expectation of what was possible with their faith was small. Though the mustard seed is small, the possibility or potential for growth in the seed is not limited by the size. The point is this, the size of a seed is not as important as the size of the dream (or potential) in the seed.
The problem was not that the disciples’ faith was too little to do miracles, on the contrary they had gone out on Jesus authority prior to that, and had performed some miracles (Matt.10, Luk.10:17), however their expectation of what was possible was small. Also the disciples asked Jesus in Matthew 17:19 why they could not drive the demon out, so this must not have been the first time they would do signs.
Friend, don’t limit the size of what is possible for you because of the size of your seed. Have big expectations. Dream big, and think big because even with faith the size of a mustard seed, nothing shall be impossible for you!
