Galatians 5:22, AMP “But the fruit of the [Holy] Spirit [the work which His presence within accomplishes] is love…”
Love is the nature of the born again Christian. Being an offspring of God, we have the nature of His love on the inside of us. When a person becomes born again, they become the temple of the Holy Spirit (1 Cor. 3:16). By the Spirit of God at work on the inside of us, His presence ought to produce the fruit of love. This is a reality, however many Christians don’t make this reality a vital truth in their lives. We must learn to identify with our nature of love, and let the love nature find expression. Christians get into malice, unforgiveness, hatred towards other people etc. These are emotional reactions that frustrate the grace of God’s salvation in the life of a believer.
Notice what 1John 3:14-15, NLT says 14 If we love our Christian brothers and sisters, it proves that we have passed from death to life. But a person who has no love is still dead. 15 Anyone who hates another brother or sister is really a murderer at heart. And you know that murderers don’t have eternal life within them. That puts it plainly. But you say ‘I know I have received Jesus in my heart, but I still feel badly towards certain people, I have difficulty forgiving that person that hurt me, you don’t know what they did to me…etc.’ The fact is that you are not letting the Spirit of God do the work which His presence accomplishes within, which is love. If you really stop to think about the people you claim to “hate”, and check within your heart, you will feel discomfort, you will feel in your gut an uneasy feeling (can’t really explain). This is so because the Spirit of God disagrees with you. The real you which is the inner man is screaming to show love.
What to do? Take a look at 1 Cor.13:4-8 in the Message translation:
Love never gives up.
Love cares more for others than for self.
Love doesn’t want what it doesn’t have.
Love doesn’t strut,
Doesn’t have a swelled head,
Doesn’t force itself on others,
Isn’t always “me first,”
Doesn’t fly off the handle,
Doesn’t keep score of the sins of others,
Doesn’t revel when others grovel,
Takes pleasure in the flowering of truth,
Puts up with anything,
Trusts God always,
Always looks for the best,
Never looks back,
But keeps going to the end.
These are the attributes of love. Your mind is probably screaming “that’s impossible”. But this is the real you. These are the attributes of the fruit of love that should be produced in you. Affirm these daily, and when an opportunity comes, act in line with what love would do, and not based on your feelings. This is what it means to walk in love.
