Matthew 9:22-23,NLT “The spirit often throws him into the fire or into water, trying to kill him. Have mercy on us and help us, if you can.” “What do you mean, ‘If I can’?” Jesus asked. “Anything is possible if a person believes.””
Too many Christians have the same attitude as the father of the demon possessed boy in Matthew 9. They have no confidence in God’s power to turn their situation around, rather they approach God with the hope that by chance something will work in their favor. This is the wrong mindset to have when approaching God. You cannot expect the power of God to work in your life based on chance. Hebrews 11:6 says that whoever approaches God must approach Him in faith believing in His person.
The boy had suffered torment from the devil since he was a little boy, with the demon often throwing him into fire and water trying to kill him. This must have been a great burden for the family. Now in Matthew 9 we see that the father is in the presence of the Master, he must have heard of the signs and wonders that Jesus performed, and rather than asks confidently he says “…help us, if you can”.
Jesus sternly rebutted this statement of doubt, “what do you mean, “if I can”?” Jesus clearly was saying to him that you cannot receive help from God beyond your expectation of Him― “anything is possible if a person believe”.
Faith is an earnest expectation of God based on knowledge of His word. What your faith expects is what you would get. You must be confident in this every time, as it is the proper attitude with which you approach God. Remember Ephesians 3:20 says that God is able to do far above what we can ask or imagine. Change the image of your thoughts (i.e. imagination) with what God’s word says, and expect accordingly because “Anything is possible if a person believes.”
