Stay Connected to the Vine
John 15:5, NKJV “I [Jesus] am the vine, you are the branches. He who abides in Me, and I in him, bears much fruit; for without Me you can do nothing”
If you’ve ever seen a fruit bearing branch cut off from a tree, it continues to look okay for days. After about a week or two you would notice that first the fruits begin to die. After another couple of days the plants begin to wilt and drop off. Then after another couple of months, the branch itself dries up. This is the picture Jesus was painting for His disciples when He said “I am the vine, you are the branches….”
Our life as Christians is dependent on our connection to the eternal life that flows from Christ. He lives in our heart, but it is very possible to carry such reservoir of life, joy, peace and power and not be connected. When Jesus said “without me you can do nothing”, He meant it. A life that is not continually dependent and submitted to God would eventually stop bearing fruit, loose its luxurious touch and eventually wither.
If you perceive that your Christian life is dry and unfruitful, you can be reconnected to the vine through fellowship. Grow in your fellowship with God by acknowledging Him in all you do (Prov.3:6), spending time studying and meditating on His Word (Joh.15:7). Carry Him in your thoughts (Ps.77:12), and pray at every opportunity (1 Thess. 5:17). Commit to doing these, because it is in the place of fellowship that we become fruitful, so stay connected to the vine!
Scriptures to Meditate: Ps.119:9,11, Phil.4:13, 1 Joh.1:7, Ps.1:1-3
