Proverbs 21:20 NKJV “There is desirable treasure, and oil in the dwelling of the wise, but a foolish man squanders it.”
One thing that’s certain is that you don’t get rich by saving, but on the flip side, you’re more likely to become rich if you already have a culture of saving. Saving gives you options, and it gives you a sense of security. Solomon expresses the wisdom of God when he says “There is desirable treasure, and oil in the dwelling of the wise”. These are representative of a store of wealth. He goes on to say that it is foolish to squander all your earnings.
It is said that the average American is one pay check away from bankruptcy. Many people are not able to take advantage of opportunities that can make them rich because they don’t have anything in savings. The excuse for many is usually that they cannot afford to save. The truth is that you not saving is costing you more than you think. The Bible describes the ants as “exceedingly wise”. Why? “The ants are a people not strong, yet they prepare their food in the summer” (Prov.30:24-25).
Start saving today! For every dollar that comes in, put aside 10% as your tithe. 10% for your savings, and 10% in your investment account. This is a good place to start for now. Begin to practice living on 70% of your income by making the necessary lifestyle adjustments. Jesus said in this world we will face tribulations, for certain, there will be rainy days. When you have “desirable treasure” in store, you will have a little more peace of mind. Determine how much you need to save for you and your family to be comfortable. I know someone who saved a year’s worth of living expenses. What yours going to be?
