Psalm 17:8 NIV “Keep me as the apple of your eye; hide me in the shadow of your wings”
Man was created to live in the presence of God. We see this as a principle in Genesis; the source of everything that was created was its sustenance. Out of the waters God created the fish, and the fish cannot live outside of water (Gen.1:20). The beasts of the field were created from the ground, and they depend on the vegetation from the ground (Gen.1:24). Likewise, man was created from God and his dependency is in God.
We have a responsibility to press into God’s presence. In the New Testament, we have a promise of God’s ever abiding presence, but Scripture reveals that God will manifest when we have a consciousness of His presence (Heb.13:5,6). “You will seek the Lord your God, and you will find Him if you seek Him with all your heart and with all your soul” (Deut.4:29). This means that we must take deliberate action to acknowledge God in all we do. Our relationship and consciousness of God increases as we acknowledge Him in prayer, reading of His Word and thanksgiving.
The apple of God’s eye represents the pupil of God’s eye. If anything foreign object tried to touch your pupil, you will slap it off quickly. The psalmist has come to understand the depth and significance of being in God’s presence. Every good thing that man desires can be found in the presence of God. The confidence to prosper against all odds comes when we are continually conscious of the ever abiding presence of God. God is with you, but you need to by faith press into God’s presence to enjoy the full benefits, because outside the presence of God, there is no safety for man.
