Mark 11:22 “So Jesus answered and said to them, “Have faith in God.””
Jesus in His earthly ministry many times used common day occurrences to teach His disciples divine secrets. In Mark 11 we witness something that the disciples marveled at. Jesus upon entering Jerusalem en-route to Bethany comes across a fig tree that was expected to have figs,“ And seeing from afar a fig tree having leaves, He went to see if perhaps He would find something on it” (verse 13). It was expected that if there were leaves there ought to be figs. However this tree was fruitless, the Bible records “Jesus answered the fig tree…Let no one eat fruit from you ever again.” The next day they were leaving the town, And Peter recalls and said “Rabbi, look! The fig tree which You cursed has withered away”
Jesus took the opportunity to teach a lesson on faith. He starts out with the statement “Have faith in God”. This was not a suggestion to His disciples but a command. He continues with the lesson “For assuredly, I say to you, whoever says to this mountain, ‘Be removed and be cast into the sea,’ and does not doubt in his heart, but believes that those things he says will be done, he will have whatever he says. Therefore I say to you, whatever things you ask when you pray, believe that you receive them, and you will have them.” (Mark 11:22-24). In essence Jesus is teaching that faith is with the heart believing in the person of God and accepting His Word for what it is, and speaking in accordance to one’s belief.
While we live on this earth, challenges will rise, we will be hard pressed by life, but it is an awesome thing to know that faith is the answer! Every life problem is a faith problem, because “the just shall live by faith” (Hebrews 10:38). Also we have confidence in the fact that “whatever is born of God overcomes the world. And this is the victory that has overcome the world—our faith” (1 John 5:4).
I stopped to think to myself recently if we have ever come to terms with the fact that everyday life ought to be by faith. I don’t mean a firefighter approach to faith but actively believing God and His Word and speaking accordingly. I stopped to wonder what victorious life we could have if for every item on our “to-do” lists we have a faith response to obstacles or a faith response to every dream and aspiration in our hearts! In verse 14 of Mark 11, we see that “Jesus answered the fig tree”, it is important to note that Jesus in His teachings also said in John 12:49 “For I have not spoken on My own authority; but the Father who sent Me gave Me a command, what I should say and what I should speak.” His responses were faith responses. He spoke the Words from God only. I submit to you that the life of faith is to have a response grounded in God’s Word for every opposition of life!
The one who believes is a possessor! The person, who lives by faith, possesses that which he believes and ultimately speaks! Faith in God believes in His person, and His Word. We see it clearly here, John 6:47 “he who believes in Me has everlasting life”, He who believes…has; The believer is a possessor. You possess what you say, because the one who believes also speaks accordingly; 2 Corinthians 4:13 “And since we have the same spirit of faith, according to what is written, “I believed and therefore I spoke” we also believe and therefore speak”. Believing is to have a confidence that the substance of one’s belief is true and can be substantiated; in this case God and His Word.
If we are to obey this command, “have faith in God”, it requires that we make daily deposits of the Word (Colossians 3:16), so that we may have faith response to daily oppositions. We must learn to accept the Words of God as the final reality and respond accordingly to challenges that may come in the course of the day.
As you plan you “to-do” lists, find a verse of Scripture for each activity, and accept this to be you response for any opposition. At the end of the day, review the day, and recall what challenges were faced, and find Scriptures for every challenge that was handled with faith. Make this a daily practice and experience newness in your life of faith!
Blessed is she [or he] who believed, for there will be a fulfillment of those things which were told her [or him] from the Lord [and His Word]”, Luke 1:45.
