Growing Up Spiritually (3)

Hebrews 10:25 NIV “Let us not give up meeting together, as some are in the habit of doing, but let us encourage one another–and all the more as you see the Day approaching.”

Yesterday’s devotional addressed the importance of spending time in God’s presence as a conducive environment for spiritual growth. The corollary to that is the fellowship of other believers. You cannot have a life of rich spiritually vitality if you isolate yourself from other believers. Human beings were created as relational beings and the test of spirituality is not in isolation but in the way we demonstrate God’s love to others.

The company of believers is not just a hangout, rather it is a gathering for the purpose of exhortation, edification and renewed vitality. 1 Corinthians 14:26 says, “How is it then, brethren? Whenever you come together, each of you has a psalm, has a teaching, has a tongue, has a revelation, has an interpretation. Let all things be done for edification.” A conscious effort must be made in this direction in order to facilitate spiritual growth.

Psalms 133 gives a beautiful picture of the benefits of unity among God’s people:

Behold, how good and how pleasant it is for brethren to dwell together in unity! It is like the precious oil upon the head, running down on the beard,

The beard of Aaron, running down on the edge of his garments. It is like the dew of Hermon, Descending upon the mountains of Zion;
For there the Lord commanded the blessing—Life forevermore.

It says in the last verse, “for there the Lord commanded the blessing—Life forevermore.”There is a blessing that is resultant from gathering with fellow believers. Ecclesiastes 4:9 says “Two are better than one, because they have a good reward for their labor.” Also Jesus in teaching His disciples concerning the authority of God’s kingdom said,  “Again I say to you that if two of you agree on earth concerning anything that they ask, it will be done for them by My Father in heaven. For where two or three are gathered together in My name, I am there in the midst of them.” (Matt.18:19-20).
