Colossians 1:9 NKJV “For this reason we also, since the day we heard it, do not cease to pray for you, and to ask that you may be filled with the knowledge of His will in all wisdom and spiritual understanding”
When a person first gets saved, they undergo a heart change. God takes out the old sin producing nature of the person and puts in a new heart that is moved by His own Spirit (Ezek.36:26). The person however still has a lot to learn because for him or her to function in the fullness of God’s will, there is a need for understanding. This was the essence of Paul’s prayer for the Colossians church.
Christian spiritual growth is about growing in the knowledge of God, and understanding His will. God’s revelation to us about His person is seen in His Word. God’s Word is an expression of His will for man. We must get into the habit of spending a few minutes every day to understand God and spiritual things by spending time reading the Bible. As we do this the Holy Spirit begins to enlighten us on concepts of God that enable us have a better relationship with Him. The more we understand and know about God, the more faith grows in our heart, our confidence in Him is strengthened, making for a better relationship with Him.
Notice what verse 10 of Colossians 1 says, “that you may walk worthy of the Lord, fully pleasing Him, being fruitful in every good work and increasing in the knowledge of God” Do you want a more fruitful Christian life that pleases God? Then spend time every day reading the epistles. They are letters written to the church (for you and I), and they express our rights and privilege in Christ Jesus.
