Ephesians 6:12 ESV “For we do not wrestle against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the cosmic powers over this present darkness, against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly places.”
Fight! This throws a lot of Christian fundamentalists off, because the traditional view of Christianity suggests that we ought to be peaceful with all men (Rom.12:18), if slapped, we turn the other cheek (Luk.6:29), and if we are being taken advantage of, we patiently continue in our service as unto the Lord (Eph.6:7). Putting all these together, the conclusion is that Christians ought to acquiesce in the face of any external pressure that comes, in order to “be like Jesus”. But have we misread Scripture? If you hold this view, absolutely!
Scripture makes it clear that our battles in this world are not against flesh and blood, but they are spiritual. Granted, we cannot fight spiritual battles by taking action in the flesh. However one must realize that the things that happen in the world around us are controlled by the spiritual world. The pressure and opposition you face as a Christian can be directly or indirectly tied to demonic activity. I do not say this so you can look for a demon in every situation. 1 John 5:19 reveals that this world is under the sway of the evil one, hence the evil and deterioration in the world we have to deal with. The life of the Christian is a call to fight! The only fight we’re called to fight is the fight of faith (1 Tim.6:12). This suggests that it is by faith we conquer the issues we face in life. The weapons of our warfare are not handmade, but they are mighty through God (2 Cor.10:3-5). This mighty weapon is the weapon of faith. It is for every believer to arm himself or herself with God’s Word, believe it, speak it and act on it.
Jesus in His earth walk fought every step of the way, but you say, “He was a man of peace”. He sure was, but the battles He fought were not against men, but against the works of evil. This is why 1 John 3:8 says, “for this purpose was the son of God manifested, that He might destroy the works of the devil“. He was successful in this. Every step of the way, when He was confronted by men (really the devil), He spoke the Word of God. If you are to win in life, you have to learn to take a fighting stance against all opposition to your destiny. It’s not people that are the problem, it’s the devil behind them. But no devil is match for the believer who has learned to speak God’s Word, pray God’s Word and stand on God’s Word.
