Genesis 32:10 “…for I crossed over this Jordan with my staff, and now I have become two companies“.
The previous devotional talked about doing business by the blessing. We saw how Jacob started with nothing but a skill he had learned from his father, and through God’s blessing and his diligence, he was able to grow to a be a huge company (or corporation as we will think of it today). God is interested in your business, and as Christians we don’t have to do business like the world. We must not let the ideologies of the world system creep into our business practices.
Let’s take a look at some of the things that worked for Jacob, which made him successful in his business. First was his commitment to tithing; Genesis 28:20-22 shows that Jacob made a vow to God which in summary was that if the pronounced blessing upon his life would produce results for him (protection, and prosperity), he would give God a tithe. Today many argue about tithing, saying it is an Old Testament thing. Firstly the word ‘testament’ means covenant. Abraham tithed (Gen.14:20), and here we see Jacob vowing to tithe, both of their commitment to tithing pre-dates the Old Testament law of tithing.
Tithing is simply a covenant practice. It demonstrates your commitment to God. Your material prosperity, is a world view of your worth, and when you commit yourself to given God a tenth of all (i.e. the tithe) you are simply saying to Him that He is welcome in every area of your life. It is the first fruit. It is a demonstration of honor; honor the Lord with the first fruit of all your increased, then your barns will be filled to overflowing (Prov.3:9).
The results of this commitment are clearly seen in Malachi 3:10-12- heaven’s windows of blessing will be open over you beyond what you can imagine, the devourer (anything that proves a liability) will be rebuked by God for you, you will always be productive, all these will happen, and competitors would know there’s something working on your behalf!
