Genesis 28:3, NASB “May God Almighty bless you and make you fruitful and multiply you, that you may become a company of peoples.”
When Jacob was going to set out and start a family of his own, and pretty much start his life independent of his father’s life, his father Isaac pronounced a blessing upon him saying “May God Almighty bless you and make you fruitful and multiply you, that you may become a company of peoples.” This was a crucial time in Jacob’s life, and Isaac who was an extremely successful business man knew that what would help Jacob succeed was the blessing. Jacob started with nothing, but the knowledge of animal husbandry which he had learned from his father.
Notice the progression of the blessing- May God make you fruitful. This is similar to how God blessed Adam in the Garden of Eden, saying “Be fruitful, multiply…” (Gen.1:28). The blessing of the Lord is what empowers you to be fruitful. To be fruitful means to produce in abundance, and multiplication, speaks of rapid increase in numbers. Jacobs knowledge of animal husbandry by the blessing was going to empower him to bear fruit. He would take his knowledge and rear his first set of animals, and from there multiplication will follow. How do I know this? Firstly, the first exercise of this blessing was in the house of Laban, and Laban attested to the fact that his flocks had increased because of the blessing on Jacob’s life (Gen.30:27). How do I know this?
When Jacob was to meet with Esau in Genesis 32:10, he says to Esau his brother “…for I crossed over this Jordan with my staff, and now I have become two companies“. Jacob had become fruitful and multiplied, from being just a single man with servants, and a staff, to becoming two companies.
Likewise in your life, you can take hold of this blessing. The blessing will cause you to be fruitful. Whatever skill you have, work it until it produces fruit, and form there as you keep a consciousness of God’s blessing, know that multiplication is expected. You are to take that one fruit that contains many seeds in it, and plant them until there is much more increase. Your company is supposed to grow this way. Develop people, develop leaders, and let your uniqueness and your skill-set produce for you.
