Isaiah 41:10 “Fear not, for I am with you; be not dismayed, for I am your God; I will strengthen you, I will help you, I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.”
One of the things that the believer must come to terms with is the fact that affliction will come. Psalm 34:19 says many are the afflictions of the righteous, but the Lord will deliver him from all of them. 1 Peter 4:12 says to not be surprised at the painful trials that we suffer, as though it were something strange. 1 Corinthians 10:13 reveals that there is no temptation or trial that we go through that is unheard of. When affliction comes our way, the natural response is to be discouraged. However when you have inside information on a particular issue, you can look ahead with joy in your heart.
The word dismay means “to break down the courage of completely, as by suddendanger or trouble.” But God says fear not! That’s a command, why? Because there are so many things He has revealed to us concerning the troubles we face. He has said He will strengthen you, help you and uphold you (Isa.41:10). He has said He will not let you suffer beyond what you can bear, and He will make a way out for you (1 Cor.10:13). He has said He will never leave you nor forsake you, so you can have boldness in the face of adversity (Heb.13:5,6). He has said He will sustain you, and will not permit you to be moved (Ps.55:22). He has said He will strengthen your faith in the midst of affliction that you may be perfected (matured), and not lacking anything (Jam.1:2-4).
If you look back, you will realize that God has proved Himself faithful in your life. So when discouragement comes, choose to rejoice rather than be sad. Look at the bright side of things, God’s promises will never fail. Charles Spurgeon said, “God will not be absent when His people are on trial; he will stand in court as their advocate, to plead on their behalf.” George Mueller who ran an orphanage of about 2500 children in the early seventeenth century, without the media to raise support, and with no means to raise regular monthly support, but he depended solely on God said, “Be assured, if you walk with Him and look to Him, and expect help from Him, He will never fail you.”
