Galatians 6:10 NKJV “Therefore, as we have opportunity, let us do good to all, especially to those who are of the household of faith.”
There is always an opportunity around for one to do good (benevolence), the issue most of the time is that we are not allowing ourselves the expression of a giving heart. The nature of love that we have by the Holy Spirit in our heart is a giving nature. Goodness is listed as one of the fruit of the spirit (Gal.5:22). Like every fruit, it hardly ever finds expression naturally. We must yield ourselves to the spirit which is contrary to the desire of our flesh to think of ourselves only.
We see a picture of this benevolence in Acts 4:32 “Now the multitude of those who believed were of one heart and one soul; neither did anyone say that any of the things he possessed was his own, but they had all things in common.” They had all things in common because they allowed themselves express love. Jesus taught that it is more blessed to give than to receive (Acts 20:35). This means that the grace to prosper is inherently in our giving. As Christians we must measure our prosperity by the measure of our giving, and how we take care of those around us.
Paul the apostle, while exhorting the church at Corinth concerning giving said, it is God who supplies the resources to give, and while we demonstrate benevolence, God’s grace abounds increasingly so we are able to continually give. Not only does this giving meet the needs of those around you, it also causes thanksgiving to abound towards God. Your benevolence is a demonstration of love, and you can be guaranteed that God being a righteous and just God will not forget your labor of love, and you will be rewarded accordingly (Heb.6:10).
