Ephesians 5 :4 “neither filthiness, nor foolish talking, nor coarse jesting, which are not fitting, but rather giving of thanks.”
One of the things that everybody has fallen victim to is either speaking at the wrong time, or using harsh words, or overstepping boundaries while teasing or all of them. As believers the Bible cautions that we don’t get into any of these. I hear many Christians tell jokes that are vulgar, or tease other people to the point it begins to hurt, and their response is “I was just joking…you’re too sensitive…can’t you take a simple joke”. Well friends it is not fitting for a Christian to use cuss words, or variations of the same, or be a part of foolish jokes and discussions or jesting!
Your responsibility is to speak words that edify (that is build others up, Eph.4:29). You should be the kind of person who speaks and causes others to be motivated, excited, or refocused. Your words are seeds, and they contain the power of life or death. Any word spoke that brings grief to another are seeds of death. There are people the Bible acknowledges as not interested in receiving wholesome words, and they are credited to be fools. But when a wise man is rebuked, he would love you and respect you for it (Prov.9:8).
Make it your priority to speak words that will edify others, be an encourager, be a fountain of hope. We live in a world today that is dying and in need of hope. Don’t empower the spirit of death that is in society today by speaking the wrong words, but rather speak life. Charge your atmosphere with life, and your surroundings with life.
