Galatians 3:27 NLT “And all who have been united with Christ in baptism have put on Christ, like putting on new clothes.”
The moment a person gives his or her life to Christ, something supernatural happens in the heart of the person. The old nature of sin is done away with, and a new nature of righteousness is born. Hence he or she becomes “born again”. It is what Ezekiel prophesied (Ez.36:26), it is what Jesus expressed to Nicodemus (Joh.3:3-6), it is also what the apostles taught the early church (2 Cor.5:17,21, 1 Pet.1:3,23).
However Scripture further reveals that it wasn’t only a heart change that occurred, but in the eyes of God, the new convert is also baptized into Christ. “Christ” refers to Jesus the anointed one, and the anointing that He possesses. One who is born again becomes grafted into the spiritual body of Christ. As the Scripture above suggests, it is as if the person is putting on new clothes. This means when looked at in the spiritual world, the Christian looks like Jesus. This helps put into perspective the challenges you face as an individual. Your challenges and attacks against your destiny are not merely attacks on you, but attacks on Jesus Himself.
Water baptism is representative of this baptism into the body of Christ. According to Scripture, water baptism follows salvation. When Jesus gave the Great Commission, He instructed that disciples be made, the beginning of which was salvation, followed by their baptism (Matt.28:19-22). This is exactly what Romans 6:3-4 reveals to us saying, “ Or do you not know that as many of us as were baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into His death? Therefore we were buried with Him through baptism into death, that just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father, even so we also should walk in newness of life.”
When a person is immersed into water, it symbolizes identification with Christ’s death, and as he or she comes out of the water, it is representative of the resurrection. Baptism is not just a religious activity. It is born out of revelation of the power of the resurrection. If you have not been baptized, or were baptized before salvation, go and get baptized again with the power of this revelation. It is a physical expression of your identification with Christ. As you come out from the water, as you come out of the water, appropriate the power of the resurrection in destroying any opposition against your life.
