Hebrews 11:9-10 ESV “By faith he went to live in the land of promise, as in a foreign land, living in tents…For he was looking forward to the city that has foundations, whose designer and builder is God”

Before God called Abraham as seen in Genesis 12 to possess the land of Cannaan, the Bible reveals that Terah, Abraham’s father had embarked on a similar journey but stopped in Haran (Gen.11:31). Abraham on the other hand is described to be a person of faith who followed through with God’s instruction. He continued moving from the place of his comfort to an unknown land. He was searching for a place where he would find peace, which would be a sign that his God given assignment was done.

When God asked him to sacrifice his son Isaac who was the child of promise, he did not hesitate. In his conviction of faith he found reason to trust God, for “Abraham reasoned that God could even raise the dead, and so in a manner of speaking he did receive Isaac back from death.” (Heb.11:17). His ability to continue was not based on his natural strength, but rather it was his faith in God that fueled his personal integrity.

The psalmist in Psalm 15 asks a pertinent question, “Lord, who may dwell in your sacred tent? Who may live on your holy mountain?” (v.1) He goes on to give an answer saying, “…who keeps an oath even when it hurts, and does not change their mind” (v.4). If you have committed to doing something will you follow through. It is a proof of the strength of your faith which helps in forming the character that makes you like Abraham “a friend of God.” (Jam.2:23)
