Genesis 14:18-20 “18 Then Melchizedek king of Salem brought out bread and wine; he was the priest of God Most High. 19 And he blessed him and said: “Blessed be Abram of God Most High, Possessor of heaven and earth;20 And blessed be God Most High, who has delivered your enemies into your hand.” And he gave him a tithe of all.”

One of the commandments of God relevant in both the Old Testament and New Testament is to honor fathers and mothers, and the accompanying promise is so that it may go well with us, and that we will live long upon the earth (Eph.6:2, Exo.20:12). The idea here is that parents are a symbol of authority, having the responsibility to train their children, guide them in the right path, and ultimately cater to their needs as God’s representative. When a child positions himself/herself under the authority of the parents, they make it easy for the prophetic blessing to follow in the life of the child. Then such a child will enjoy the blessings of obedience in long life, and prosperity.

Likewise in business, there are always authority figures; these are people who are leaders in their field. They have walked the path that you and I tread on right now to success in business. When you submit yourself to such people, you give them the permission to speak into your life, they are able to give insight, wisdom, and guidance in running your business. They are similar to parents; I believe God will always place such people around business people as a resource. You and I have to be wise enough to recognize them and honor them accordingly. As we do this, it surely will go well with your business, and it will be long lived also.

Now in addition to positioning yourself under such authority figures, it is important that you know the appropriate way to honor them. In Genesis 14:18-20, we see that Abraham gave Melchizedek a tithe of all. While it is very important that you tithe as a part of your business, that is the honor that is due God. It is also important that you honor fathers and mothers in business with a token of the produce of your business. If you received insight from someone that saved your business thousands of dollars, it is only appropriate that you take a portion of those savings and give in honor of that person.

This is an old Jewish practice that has brought about prosperity as well as full benefits of the blessings in the lives of devotees.
