“While we do not look at the things which are seen, but at the things which are not seen. For the things which are seen are temporary, but the things which are not seen are eternal.” 2 Corinthians 4:18, NKJV

Paul in giving a benediction prays “may your whole spirit, soul, and body be preserved blameless” (1 Thessalonians 5:23), which clearly identifies a three part nature of the human being. When God created man, He created Him in His image and likeness (Gen. 1:26), so by deduction, man is a spirit being just like God, and in the same class of being as God, for God is a spirit (John 4:24). This is not saying in any way that man is God, but a person who is born again is an offspring of God. Man is known to train the body through physical culture, and exercises strength ability. Likewise, through study, memory training and critical thinking and dialog, the intellect of man is trained and exercised in learning. There also is a development and training of one’s spirit. Man for a long time has sought after the supernatural, seeking explanations to phenomenon that challenge the senses. This quest for knowledge of the things of the spirit have brought about the prevalence of the occult and perverted manifestation of strange powers. Although man is a spirit being, we know no truth about the spirit realm except what the Author of the spiritual (eternal) realm teaches. As the body and mind are cultivated, so also the development of the spirit nature of man is necessary.

Genesis, the book of beginnings gives some insight into the operation in the eternal. In Genesis 1, we witness the story of the (re)creation of the world. Hebrews 11:3 sheds more insight saying “By faith we understand that the worlds were framed by the word of God, so that the things which are seen were not made of things which are visible.” Genesis 1:2 “The earth was without form, and void; and darkness was on the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God was hovering over the face of the waters.”

However the Author of spiritual things didn’t call things as they appeared but went ahead to declare “light!”. The first rule in operating in the eternal is to call forth light in the midst of darkness. We do not call things as they appear to be, but rather call things that are not as though they were. We see the phrase “and darkness was on the face of the deep”. This refers to the presence of opposing forces of evil that dominated the world in its void state, and God introduces “light”. Light here is not light as it were from the sun, as this was created in later verses, but light here refers to illumination by the Spirit of God (aka the glory of God i.e. the manifest presence of God, See John 1:1-5; 8:12, Heb.1:3, Eph.6:12, Col.1:13.  Jesus is the light of the world, so we see the triune being of God (plural) involved in the creation of the world, Father, Son (light) and Spirit. The model of creation here is speaking the word of God by the Spirit of God, and demanding the introduction of the manifest presence of God. Before the resumption of any work that has its existence in chaos, one must first seek illumination into the issue at hand. Then in the next series of verses we witness the absolute nature of God’s word in creation by the Spirit of God.

It takes the life of God at work in the spirit of man to appropriately walk in the eternal and not in the perverted operations of the occult. The things of darkness are real, however we operate in the realm of light which darkness cannot withstand. Operating in the eternal is operating in faith. Faith is the answer to life’s challenges. Faith is the force of the human spirit. The things that we see around came from a manifestation of things that pre-existed in the realm of the spirit. With such knowledge, just like the world was framed from the unseen through faith, we can frame our world through faith because everything that we see is subject to change! Whether good or bad, operating in faith will change what we see today. An understanding of the reality that everything that we see around us today started out as an idea that was created within a person will help in consummating the force of faith within us. An image is always the reflection of something else. When we live by faith, we create an image in our spirits and it takes the force of faith to bring the physical manifestation of the image within. Proverbs 4:20 warns of this and says “Keep your heart with all diligence, for out of it spring the issues of life.” (Matthew 12:33-37; 15:18-20). We have a responsibility to protect our hearts from forming the wrong images on life. However with the right image in our spirits (i.e. the core of our being) we can operate in faith through the word (for faith comes by the word of God, Rom.10:17) and bring to reality our unseen realities!
