God is the giver of life, and we know that all good and perfect gifts come from Him (Jam.1:17), and that includes life. This means to have victory over sickness and disease, as well as having full body function till the body wears out completely, and being happy and strong  in old age. You may ask yourself if this is possible, and it certainly is. The quality of life that you will enjoy can’t be left to chance, it takes a deliberate effort on your part in concordance with God’s grace to enjoy a long prosperous life. This brings up the next question, what exactly is long life? If you ask me, I will say 120 years in accordance with Genesis 6:3.

Many people think God is a giver and taker of life. This is not true, God gives life, yes, and he gives life richly to enjoy.  He promises by covenant in Psalm 91:16 “With long life I will satisfy him, and show him My salvation.” This means that you determine when you are satisfied with life, and God will honor that. He promises to reveal His salvation, which is His saving, delivering power; deliverance from everything that will be a hindrance to a healthy long life. Here are seven ways from the Good Book to live a healthy long life.

1. Laugh a lot

Laughter is relaxing and it is said to release chemicals in the body that make us feel better and ultimately cause the body to function better.  Scientific studies have gone on to show that people who laugh a lot are likely to live a healthier life and a longer life. Laughter is an antidote for stress, it inspires hope, and lightens burdens. Some more scientific research shows that laughter helps boost the body’s immune system, strengthening the defense against disease causing organisms. The converse is true; when one is broken in spirit, it begins to take a toll on the body and causes the opposite to take place. So the next time you’re in a situation that tries to get the best of you, give yourself a dose of laughter. Fake it till you actually find yourself really laughing, or if that’s too difficult, get something that will crack you up. The goal is to get yourself laughing!

Proverbs 17:22 “A merry heart does good, like medicine, but a broken spirit dries the bones.”

2. Be free from strife and bitterness

Someone once said that strife is like drinking poison and hoping someone else will die. Strife is a situation when one takes offence against someone else, and this offence becomes deep rooted in the subconscious. It begins to govern the life of its host negatively. The Bible reveals where there is strife that there is confusion and every work of evil in the environment of such a person (Jam. 3:16).

Hebrews 12:15 “…lest any root of bitterness springing up cause trouble, and by this many become defiled”

Bitterness in one’s heart begins to shut down the bodily system of such a one. Indeed it acts like a poison in the person’s body. This is why it is very important to forgive people very quickly. Make an excuse in favor of people who have wronged you. It may hurt at that moment, but the benefits outweigh the cost. Begin to release from your heart those with whom you have been keeping a grudge. While the emotional scar may linger, you have to make a choice to not let this govern your life. Choose to act out your forgiveness towards such a person and demonstrate love and kindness.

Proverbs 18:14 “The spirit of a man will sustain him in sickness, but who can bear a broken spirit?”

3. Healthy diet habits: fasting, and major on fruits and vegetables

I’m not in any way advocating becoming a vegetarian; however it is important to have a good portion of your diet as vegetables and fruits.  Maybe a vegan diet for one week in every month? I like to stop and think about Adam’s assigned diet in the Garden of Eden. Genesis 1:29 “See, I have given you every herb that yields seed which is on the face of all the earth, and every tree whose fruit yields seed; to you it shall be for food”. Fruits and vegetables contain essential anti-oxidants, vitamins, minerals, and fiber that may help protect you from chronic diseases rid your body of poisonous toxins.

It was later in Genesis 9:2,3 that meat was added to the diet of mankind. The key here is balance; all things must be done in moderation, and this may mean cutting down on starchy carbohydrates and animal protein, while increasing one’s intake of herbs, grains and fruits.

Also very important here is going on a fast. Fasting and praying has its spiritual benefits in keeping you sensitive to God, and helping in making a stronger connection through His Word and Spirit. There are also natural benefits to fasting. In a time of fast the body is not working on digesting food, and it can spend time in properly detoxifying the body. How long should you fast? I’ll recommend at least once in two weeks for a whole day for proper development. Drinking a lot of water is very important during a fast.

4. Drink A LOT of water

We live in an age with a variety of drinks, and it takes a deliberate effort to drink water now. Water is very essential in our body physiology.  Over 70% of the human body is made up of water, so it should be no surprise here. Water helps to transport nutrients and oxygen into cells, moisturizes the body organs, and it helps the body in getting rid of poisonous toxins.

From Scripture, thematically we see streams of water as a part of God’s promise of prosperity. The Bible talks about the rivers of water in Eden (Gen.2:8-10), the streams of water that flow in the Land of Canaan etc. Water has been symbolic for life in the Bible, and in the symbolism there is truth. Is it any wonder why there were two major rivers running through the Garden of Eden? Also there is the river of life that is talked about in the time of the new heaven and earth.

Revelations 22:1-2 “And he showed me a pure river of water of life, clear as crystal, proceeding from the throne of God and of the Lamb. 2 In the middle of its street, and on either side of the river, was the tree of life, which bore twelve fruits, each tree yielding its fruit every month. The leaves of the tree were for the healing of the nations.”

5. Exercise Daily

The body is important for staying here on earth, and this is not just about losing weight only but also about training our muscles. We understand that muscles need to be exercised to keep them growing, strong and healthy. A principle of exercising is to exercise, nutrition and rest, and this builds capacity for greater tasks. The heart is a muscle that REALLY needs to be exercised. Many people overwork their heart beyond its capacity. People are becoming lazier by the day with the rise of new technology. One can almost run life from a chair. While I’m just being facetious, it suggests the gravity of the no-exercise problem. If you are going up to the third floor, you don’t necessarily have to take the elevator. You don’t have to drive one or two blocks to the grocery store, park a good distance from the building you’re going to etc. These are simple ways by which you can get some moderate exercise in to your daily lifestyle. This isn’t all that’s required in exercising, however it is much better than sitting in a chair, and handling life through a cell phone, lap top or some voice activated piece of equipment.

1 Timothy 4:8 “For bodily exercise profits a little”

Scripture here acknowledges that bodily exercise is profitable. Obedience to this verse of Scripture will prove to be a blessing to you ;)

6. Walk in the Light of God’s Word

“My son, give attention to my words; incline your ear to my sayings.  Do not let them depart from your eyes; keep them in the midst of your heart; for they are life to those who find them, and health to all their flesh.”  Prov. 4:20-22

How’s that for a daily prescription? We’re in a world today were people constantly pop pills for all kinds of things. However this is heaven’s prescription; keep the Word of God! God’s inoculates you against spiritual, emotional and physical sickness. The first step in obedience to the Scripture is to receive eternal life in Christ Jesus (John 3:16). This should probably have been the very first way to live a long health life. It’s only by accepting the giver of life that life can be guaranteed for anyone, else it’s a hit or miss thing. Get Scriptures on health, wellness and every area of life (career, academics, family, relationships, finances etc) and meditate on them daily.

Here are a few: Prov. 3:5-8, 3John 2, Ps.107:20, Gal.4:19, 2 Cor.8:9, Gal.3:13, Eccl.4:9, Josh.24:15

7. Be a life giver and love all the way

The power of life and death are in the tongue and those that understand the use of the tongue will enjoy its benefits (Prov.18:21). The words that we speak are very important because they are a pointer to the state of our inner being. When we speak words of life and strength, we are projecting an inner balance of life and strength. It shouldn’t stop there, but we should also speak words of life into other people. This means giving of yourself and giving of your heart, and this includes your time and resources, to help others live better.

Psalm 34:12 says “Who is the man who desires life, and loves many days, that he may see good? Keep your tongue from evil, and your lips from speaking deceit.” In essence a deceitful person or one with a profane mouth is cutting the chance of a good long and healthy life.

Speak life, speak hope, speak positively, and speak blessings! When you speak this way, you will be moved to corresponding action in loving people. Love is not just about how you feel, but it is a decision to be patient, and still remain kind, and to prefer others over one’s self. You may feel it is undeserved to act this way to someone who has wronged you, but the beauty about love is that you give up this right. That’s exactly what God did for us in Christ Jesus (Rom.5:6-8).

Proverbs 16:24 “Pleasant words are like a honeycomb, sweetness to the soul and health to the bones.”

I think what’s most important in this article is its potential to motivate Christians to be healthier, because it’s not just based on scientific knowledge, but on biblical principles as well. In order to do the work that God has called us to do, we need strong, healthy bodies. And He’s given us the necessary knowledge in His Word (Prov 3:5-8!). There are too many physically unhealthy Christians with chronic diseases, who are dying so young. It’s time we walked in the health that was purchased for us. I really believe these steps can make a big difference in people’s lives (especially #2, lol).

Aanu thanks for your comment…Prov 3:5-8 <- Word! I'm big on living healthy and living strong, which was one of the things that motivated me to write this article. My prayer is that we all grow in the God kind of love as highlighted in 1 Cor.13:4-8 (Amplified)

      Be blessed :)
